MONACO MASTER PLAN
Neighborhood Master Plan
Executive Architect: Jesus Torres Architects
The following project is a proposal for a restricted competition in Monaco. The competition was commissioned by the Monaco council and Prince of Monaco Albert II. The client required to develop a proposal for the urban regeneration of the city center. The project had to include a design of new underground parking and a massing of new residential complexes with new public spaces.
The proposal was developed during a period of six months and includes 4 stories underground parking with over 400 parking places and a massing of new residential complexes consisting of 10 towers and a modern church. The parking can be entered by the car from underground tunnels on the west of the development as well as from the street level. The parking features skylights in order to maximize the use of natural daylight and therefore minimize electricity consumption.
The rigid forms were developed to juxtapose historic buildings and towers of the Monaco city center. Rotating, slicing, and intersecting planes allowed achieving a unique and modern look for the new complex. Shifting towers on the plane axes away from each other, with an intent to replicate city streets with its secluded private gardens, allowed to create a layout where almost every building has an unobstructed view of the world-famous Monaco port Hercules.
The landscape design was developed by the renewed French firm. A close collaboration on landscape and hardscape designs, allowed achieving a feeling of a modern oasis hidden in the historic center of Monaco.
