The Modern Barn, located in the Mandeville Canyon, behind the lush greenery of oil trees, takes its design roots from the Napa Valley farmhouses. The design seeks to create a modern farmhouse, rustic yet elegant in every detail. Stone and reclaimed wood, brass appliances and iron chandeliers, barn doors, and oak paneling were used throughout the house to create a rustic ambiance. To create a modern feel, marble fireplaces, elegant steel doors, and contemporary furniture was used.
The design of 36,000 square foot property with 8 bedrooms, features a basement with a gym, spa, temperature-controlled wine room, and a movie theater. To move away from the traditional basement always seen as an afterthought space with artificial light, a light well spanning the whole length of the house was added. Thus a 13 feet ceiling basement no longer feels like a useless space but rather as an amenity level.
The first floor can be separated into two parts. The first part has more secluded rooms: guest room, library, family room, and formal dining. Rooms where privacy and intimacy for the visitors has to be provided. The second part is designed as an open plan, for rooms to seemingly flow into each other and open to the vast back yard.
The top floor of the house includes 4 bedrooms and an additional family room. The Master suite is separated by the double-sided fireplace, into a sitting area with vaulted ceilings and a bedroom. The sitting area and bedroom with the help of motorized pocket doors seemingly blend into the covered deck to provide a spectacular view of the back yard. Each side of the master suite features his and her bedroom with a marble-lined shower.
The back yard features 40 feet long pool surrounded with manicured and flourishing landscape for owners to enjoy sunny California. The pool house situated along the pool was designed to include two additional bedrooms and a bar area. Finished with the same stone and reclaimed wood, the pool house feels like a house on its own.
